The determination of the sulphates balance of a melting furnace allows to accurately identify and quantify the different streams of sulfur-bearing materials flowing therein; based on this information, it is for example possible to take the corrective actions necessary to reduce SOx emissions, while at the same time guaranteeing maximum plant performance. If the balance is extended also to the acid gases scrubbing plant, the derived information can also guide in the management of sorbent (e.g. Ca(OH)2 or Na2CO3) injection and in the recycling of filter dust.

The analysis of incoming raw materials, outgoing glass, filter dust and gaseous emissions into the atmosphere is carried out, and the balance is calculated by applying specific algorithms.
