Differential Scanning Calorimetry measurements are based on comparing the thermal behaviour of a given sample with that of a standard reference material. In particular, the characteristic temperatures at which physical, chemical or mineralogical transformations occur in the sample are identified by the differences in heat exchange between the sample and the reference material with the measuring furnace; furthermore, by quantifying the exothermic or endothermic peaks, it is also possible to measure the reaction energies associated with these transformations.
